Discussions
happening in the forum:
Race,
Culture, and Skepticism
"Then perhaps describing the phenomena as 'racial' is exclusive
to the US? Because in Australia and the UK, I defintely see this issue
as a mix of cultural and socio-economic values imposed by the community
you're raised in."
Deadly
Immunity
"Wrong; a quick search turns up that several European countries
had the same trend and parents slacked off on pertussis (whooping cough)
vaccinations; the result of course was a rise in illnesses as the level
fell below the 'herd immunity' threshold, lots of sick kids, and a few
died."
Concealed
Gender (and other things) Online
"I found it awkward at first not knowing if I was "talking
to" a ten year old or a sixty year old, a man or a woman. In theory,
perhaps this should make no difference. I think sometimes it does, sometimes
it doesn't." |
Frequently
Asked Questions
What's in the calendar?
The calendar features 12 beautiful photos of skepchicks, along with
quotes from great critical thinkers as well as important dates in
science and skepticism. Unfolded, the calendar will measure 11"
x 17".
Where does the profit go?
Most of this year's funds will go toward a scholarship to help skepchicks
in need get to The Amaz!ng
Meeting 4. A small amount will be held over to help take care
of administrative costs for next year (such as for filing paperwork
to become a non-profit -- no one involved with the organization receives
any compensation) as we continue to expand and develop more intiatives.
How do you decide who gets a scholarship?
The idea for this calendar was born in part from an expressed need
of many women in the community. Though there is another fundraising
drive sponsored by the posters at the JREF
forum, there is often not enough money to help everyone who needs
it. Therefore, this year we will be helping the women who have come
to the JREF for aid. Due to the resounding success of the calendar
and Skepchicks, Intl., next year we plan to put in place a full scholarship
application process.
Though we may not have enough funds, if you wish to be considered
for aid this year, please e-mail
us with some information about yourself so we can either place
you in our queue or refer you to someone else who may be able to help.
Please note that none of the women in the calendar have received a
scholarship, or any other kind of compensation. They contributed their
time and effort to this project free of charge.
Will you publish the identities of women receiving scholarships?
We will not publish names. However, we will give information such
as age, goals and aspirations, and past contributions to the cause.
In the future, some TAM-attendees may report on how they are utilizing
the skills and education they have received.
Is Skepchicks, Intl. a non-profit?
We are currently in the process of filing the paperwork necessary
to secure that 501(c)(3) status for the future. However, the purchase
of a calendar is not considered a charitable deduction.
Why are you only helping women?
There is a serious lack of female representation actively involved
in science and skepticism. We would like to encourage more women to
participate in critical thinking, and at the same time we hope to
make the subject a little more fun and accessible for everyone.
What if I don't agree with what you're doing?
You are free to not support us; however, we welcome spirited discourse,
so if you'd like to discuss issues of women and skepticism with other
intelligent people, sign up for our forum.
